VOLUME I
AL
In 1848, Augustin Jal, a naval archivist, published an invaluable directory of ancient and modern naval terms, the Nautical Glossary, which has become an essential reference for all historians, researchers and maritime history enthusiasts.
In 1970, under the leadership of the CNRS, a team of researchers decided to take it up and expand it by broadening its horizons, while preserving the spirit of its founder. This New Nautical Glossary would establish itself as one of the most extensive and original lexicographical undertakings of our time. Published in around ten volumes until 2021, this collective work has been enriched over the years with the most recent discoveries in archaeology.
Now complete, it is brought together here for the first time in two volumes. Letter by letter, it offers an exceptional panorama of sailing ship terms, taking into account variations according to practices, societies, and eras. It is the entire language and universe of "seafarers," in all its richness and complexity, from the 9th century to the 19th century, which is presented here to be read and seen.
